The Law Firm of Smith & Smith Mission.

We use plain language, professional guidance and caring counsel to assist clients in protecting their families, both financially and emotionally, since we never know what the future will bring. Prior planning saves money and preserves families.

About The Law Firm of Smith & Smith’s Estate Planning.

When you hire our firm, you are not paying for a set of estate planning documents. If you want documents, you can get those from any attorney or the Internet. Our clients hire us because they want, and we are, attorneys who provide guidance, advice, counsel and support that results in their best plan.

We encourage anyone interested in estate planning to come to our office for a complimentary consultation. Prior to the consultation we will ask that you complete an initial worksheet. During the consultation, we will discuss you, your family and the things that are important to you now, and after you are gone. Together, we will determine the estate plan that best suits your wishes.

We focus not only on the safe, successful, transfer and protection of your assets, but also the intangible assets – the values, insights, stores and experiences that are important to you and your future generations.

Our Process.

During this part of the estate planning process, we suggest that you attend one of our workshops so that you are fully aware of all that estate planning can do for you and your family. We will then schedule a meeting, which we call a Vision Meeting because we will assess what you want in your plan and we will provide you with options to create whatever you are missing. If a workshop is not available or there is a crisis, we will have an Initial Meeting to assess your situation and needs. In any event, in preparation for our first meeting, we will have you fill out an Estate Planning Questionnaire where you can begin to identify and express your goals and concerns, and we will ask you to provide us with copies of your current estate planning documents, if any. We ask that you return the Questionnaire and provide us with your documents at least two days before the Vision Meeting or Initial Consultation.

We will discuss in detail your background and family, goals and concerns, and any issues identified in the Estate Planning Questionnaire and your current estate planning documents that require further consideration.

During this meeting, the proposed estate plan design will be presented to you. Together, we will work through the details of the proposed plan to create a customized estate plan strategy that meets your goals and objectives while addressing your concerns and anxieties.

Together, we review the plan documents to ensure you understand your estate plan, and that it meets your goals and objectives. You will also sign the legal documents to implement the estate plan.

Once the estate plan documents have been executed, we are available to assist you with beneficiary designation changes and, depending upon the plan you selected, other funding issues to ensure the planning is effective and works as designed.

If you want us to do so, we will also educate your family members, executors, trustees, agents and beneficiaries about your plan, their roles in the plan, and why the plan is designed as it is. On the one year anniversary of your estate plan, we can arrange a meeting to review the plan in light of any changes in your family, finances, the law, or new planning strategies to help ensure your plan continues to carry out its original intent.
